Save our Murray. It is South Australia's as well, keep it running freely all the way to the Coorong. Teach people to save more water and teach irrigators to grow the correct crops for a dry nation. No Cotton or rice crops for instance. Don't try to grow things that need massive water use. Companion planting could also help.

WE voted and the people got the government that they wanted, now lets see if the new government can solve the problem of the Murray -Darling river systems.
D Berryman - Woodcroft - SA - Australia - Family Support Worker / Financial Counsellor
Please save our water. This should never have been allowed to get to this point. Plans should have been put in place 20years or so age. Once we started paying for it it became precious. Will one day we be forced to move overseas as refugees? Just get on with it.

Action speak louder than words. We have listened to MP's crap on for years about what they are doing for our Country. So far all they have done is stuff the Murray. What are our children going to do without the Murry River system?
A Musgrove - Mildura - VIC - Australia - Commercial Hot Air Balloon Operator
Please build new or more storages for water supplies as the river communities must be able to irrigate regardless of rainfall. Pipeline water from the northen territory to ensure water can be used for irrigation even in very dry seasons. The river commuities are able to survive almost any problems thrown at them by nature as long as we have water to keep producing food and income.

The huge economic repercussions will be felt around Australia if solutions to the "water problem" are not found and realities faced. This is NOT just a LOCAL issue!
J Hamer - Adelaide - SA - Australia - State Manager
I am tired by the lack of response and action from all levels of government. Enough is enough, the election is over. As a concerned citizen I demand action be taken to ensure that the people at most risk are not left to rot like the valuable food source they provide to our communities. I only have one vote, however I will use it on all levels to make our governements accountable in the future.

Our politicians remain starngely quiet our press sensationalise headline to sell paper that hurts us further. It is scandalous irrigators are being forced off their land and tourism in such areas are being affected. Yet Big business is still buying water/planting trees(non essential crops) and no one says a word-Shame on you shame on you. Yet you openly congratulate those that want a green lawn.

we have beautiful tranquil garden settings as a main feature, without water we just have accommodation. Everyone should have equal use of water! why should a property next to ours be able to water with FMIT water. Instead of spending so much money on worring about who's using what & when, WHY NOT put the money towards helping put a simple grey water system in place. REUSE what is being used!!!!!
W Watson - Goolwa - SA - Australia - Marketing
Save our mighty river, every day we see the water levels slowly dropping, the bird life & fish are now scarce where it use to be in abundance. All Govt.need to visit the River in all states/towns to see the impact, at Goolwa the sea level is higher than the River level, stop draining the Murray and LET THE RIVER FLOW...
P Kennedy - Paringa - SA - Australia - Houseboat Hire Manager
Our bookings are down due to the media perception that there is no water in the Murray. We have had cancellations from hirers who are concerned the effects of the drought will effect their incomes. We are very nervous about the future of this business as we are totally dependent on tourists and hirers from all walks of life.
M Chorney - Mannum - SA - Australia - Riverview Rise Retreats
Enough political jaw flapping. We need DECISION makes in government NOW! The way the Minister for the Murray (K. Maywald) is addressing the water problem can be summed up in one word "incompetent" and deserves our Vote of no confidence if decisive action is not taken.
C Irwin - Hindmarsh Island - SA - Australia - Resident/Farmer/Marina Operator
Stop wrecking the Lower Lakes to preserve over-allocated water licences upstream! We have totally destocked because your inept management has made the Murray too salty for cattle to drink. Price water appropriately to force capital expenditure and rationalisation of inappropriate irrigation. Take OUR budget surpuses and buy back serious water volumes for natural flows to keep our estuary alive!

I have just seen the sad plight of the river first hand from Mildura to Echuca & I am disgusted that nothing is being done, where is my Murray River LEVY being spent, nowhere that I can see. Get off your backsides & traverse the river YOU WILL BE DEPRESSED as I was. Governments need to STOP multinational companies from planting grapevines & olives they are not staples of the food bowl of the river
C Gasmier - Adelaide - SA - Australia - Photographer
Australians voted for new leadership - so now it's time for some new approaches to fix the water crisis, no excuses. Everyone is responsible but the leaders hold the cards. Ignoring the problem wont make it go away.
W Chorney - Mannum - SA - Australia - Accommodation operator
Hopefully the new government elect will do more than wait for it to rain. We need a sustainable water supply, particularly within this dry state, and we should not be asking the Murray to foot the bill.

Please get the water plan into the eyes of us irrigators. We are in dire need of proper information to decide whether or not we are going to able to stay in business. We are not fools. The people presently running the river system are the fools. Please give us the info we need and do it NOW!!!!!!

J Reedman - Berri - SA - Australia - Tourism operator
Its time for a completely new approach to management of the whole basin. It will never work when each State controls a bit. This is one instance when the Federal government should take complete control in the interests of ALL Australians. I am sure that they would win a referendum to get the power for this.
d hammond - echuca - VIC - Australia - volunteer

Please consider the growers who are in dire straights with the lack of water. Australia must be able to grow its own product for australian consumers. We are a fruit bowl region. The federal Government must oversee the whole system. The murray must continue to flow for the whole country. Get rid of the rice/cotton growers
C Feely - Hampstead Gardens - SA - Australia - Real Estate Agent
M Littore - Dareton - NSW - Australia - Citrus Grower/Packer
J Kemble - Waikerie - SA - Australia - Cleaning Contractor
Please understand that without sufficient water our citrus and grape industries will die. Orange trees which are now already retarded take at least 2 years to bear productively again & new plantings take 5 years before profitibility. They need water NOW. Job losses are already evident here & property is devalueing fast. Irrigators who had sizeable assets face the prospect of being left destitute
M Marafioti - Renmark - SA - Australia - Horticulturalist
The current plight of the River and industry dependant upon it are in jepordy, I believe due to the current mis-management by states of this resource. There exists inequalties between States in their allocations to the demise of the River environment which has been marked over the past few decades. A moratorium on irrigation development is needed, and the whole catchment managed at a Federal level
F welsh - mildura - VIC - Australia - retired
we can all help if the state and federal governments would make a law on saving water with the air conditioners by not having to put them on before the temperatures gets to 29 degrees that is just one way, of many, of the responsibility's of the governments
S Rogers - Seppeltsfield - SA - Australia - Tourism Operator
It is time for a national bipartisan approach to this issue. Governments and users in NSW & Vic have to learn how to responsibly use water just as we have had to downstream in SA.

Having been visiting the River Murray for over 30 years, I see a clear need to improve all aspects, and ensure that there is a self sustainable river, environmentally and economically and look for new sources to supply residential areas in the cities - like grey water, rain water tanks, etc - Please give my children and grand children a chance to see a pristine and sustainable Murry river system.

D Keyes - Walker Flat - SA - Australia - Manager/Farmer
We need a National approach from all levels of Govt., to address the years of neglect/miss-management to the "water" problem in Aust. Similar approach needed to that of the Snowy Mountain construction project last century......
J Frankel - Glossop - SA - Australia - School Support Officer
I am concerned about the sustainability of the Murray River - over the last 12 years I have noticed an extremely large increase in the development of farming and virgin land into irrigation areas within the basin
A Frankel - Glossop - SA - Australia - Teacher
I am concerned about the amount of water that has been sold to developers.10 years ago, Blind Freddy could see that the situation we are in now, was inevitable, given the new devlopments that were starting to take place then. Low rainfall + high extraction = a sick river, a struggling environment, less production and employment.
S Cutting - Broken Hill - NSW - Australia - Mechanic

it's time that the State Government, not just the Fed Gov became involved. We have paid levies for too long with nothing happening. Hundreds of millions of State taxpayers money has been collected with little being spent on the actual saviour of Murray river and lake Alexandrina. No more talk and study we need action.
b foster - murray bridge - SA - Australia - retired market gardener
less talk and inaction. Spend our taxes and levies and do something for the river and Lake Alexandriner. The SA River Murray Farmers have shouldered the burdeon and too many have been forced off their farms. The people of this country, especially those in the cities, will be the eventual losers. Perhaps then politicians will want to do something.
L Vears - Swan Reach - SA - Australia - Manager
The Government has to listen, it cannot let disappear our beautiful river. I cannot believe we should be growing cotton and rice in this country - someone show some initiative, it is the beautiful bird life, it is the trees, for goodness sake, it is our lifeline, do not destroy it by lack of action. We know we are the driest country, work with it and help restore it to be the mighty Murray again

To all politicians, get off your fat lazy backsides and actually do something for the river murray and the people of Australia, and show us you do have some conscience and morals.
R Armstrong - Hallett Cove - SA - Australia - Retired Engineer
Dear sir, it is about time you people in the corridors of Australian power did less talking (and afterwards feeling good about it)and justified to us plebs the real reason you are getting paid such significant amounts. The river is dying by abuse. Do not be pallbearers at this funeral, and let us get the river into Intensive Care, ward recovery and sent home cured. You are a long time dead.
L Sanchez-Cunat - REYNELLA - SA - Australia - Lecturer (retired)
The Murray-Darling Basin is probably one of the most important, vital and beautiful environment assets of Australia. We, all of us, and over all the authorities, both at federal and state level, must do everything to keep it for the sake of the future of this still "lucky country".

Please don't let our river die in South Australia - it has shrunk terribly, and many lqgoons are dry - don't let our plants and birds disappear. South Australia will be nothing without water - no agriculture, no tourism, no pride - our beautiful state destroyed. Find a way to channel more water into the river system - capture rainfall from the north australian rains
P Fernandez - Gawler Belt - SA - Australia - Pest Controller
The current water crisis is a direct result of the inaction of ALL State and Federal politicians from ALL parties for many years. The current water crisis did not happen overnight and a lack of planning for the future has created this and now they have the audacity to make me pay and responsible for this fiasco, they should be held accountable not ME.
A McFarlane - Meningie - SA - Australia
Those who live in the Lower Murray are extremely concerned about the state of low water levels in the area. Lakes Alexandrina and Albert are in danger of being destroyed. The fate of the Aral Sea could be repeated in Australia.
E Fernandez - Gawler - SA - Australia - Small Business Owner
Considering SA is the driest State in the driest country the lack of action by Governments to 1. plan for future water needs and 2 urging not only South Australians but all Australians to limit their use of water is not acceptable. I demand water use, management and planning be top priority of all governments and this fact must be made clean to all people living here, homeowners, visitors Coucils

Living by the Murray River at present is like sitting and watching Rome burn! WE all feel so helpless so please can those who have power, take immediate action to address some of these urgent issues to halt the degradation of this magnificent Australian icon.

FOR TOO LONG POMP & OVER BUDGETED REPORTS HAVE LEAD TO NOTHING OR INAPROPRIATE DESCISIONS CONSUMING FUNDS THAT COULD HAVE BETTER USE. OVER CONFIDENCE IN MINIMAL FLOW RATES AND ALLOWING FURTHER PLANTATIONS ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE AND INNAPROPRIATE. THE SYSTEM OF BUYING OTHERS WATER RIGHTS ALLOWS THE CASHED UP TO FURTHER ABUSE THE 'SYSTEM'. THE PRIMARY FOCUS MUST BE A HEALTHY RIVER & ASTUTE IRRIGATION.
G Ellis - Stirling North - SA - Australia - Fitter
Its time for the pathetic SA Government to stand up & demand action on the MURRAY. & demand the self centred VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT TO AGREE!!!
R Smyth - Flinders Park - SA - Australia - Retired
Fix the river! Insist that Victoria joins the other States in a combined effort to allow more water to flow downstream. Stop all open irrigation systems. Reduce the irrigation of crops not suitable for Australian conditions (cotton and rice).
H Pullar - Murray Bridge - SA - Australia - Retired
Ban all open channel irrigation and use promised Govt. money to replace channel's with pipelines and assist irrigaror's affected by the ban. The Locks should be modified so water flows under the log barriers instead of over the top to help reduce silting of river bed and reduce salinity buildup. Let the lakes return to tidal sea water and pipe water around lakes for irrigation.
A Hurle - Meningie - SA - Australia - Spare Parts Manager
This issue needs to be strongly looked at and now! As a resident living on Lake Albert and the Coorong i can see first hand the devastation. Please act and save our Murray.
J Fogden - Loxton - SA - Australia - Teacher
We need to save more water. We can't eat roses in a garden in Adelaide, but we need oranges etc. You can plant a rose any time but it will take 7 years for our oranges to grow back. You also need to limit household use to a certain amount per day.
K Leese - North Fitzroy - VIC - Australia - Teacher
Having grown up on Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert, I am beyond disbelief at the neglect shown to diary farmers in this region. I am disgusted that all levels of government are not meeting the needs or concerns of these people. I grew up on a thriving diary farm that was a proud family business. Mismanagement along the river has diminished its income. Is this a fair go? Clearly not.
l sims - adelaide - State - Australia - registered nurse/prooperty owner

The river in the Lower Murray is becoming stagnant. We have been unable to irrigate pasture for our cattle this year due to low allocations. We need your help urgently. Water is an essential commoditity that is needed by all Australians. Farmers need your help.Australia needs farmers. No water, No farmers, No farmers No food! No food??? J Wehr - Freeling - SA - Australia - Retired
Stop Managed Investment Schemes, using water to grow vines/almonds etc in unsuitable areas with insufficient rainfall. Schemes used as tax deduction for syndicates with no thought of repercussions. Areas suitable for broad acre farming, capable of growing food crops without irrigation, should be kept free of water-hungry plantings.
D Wehr - Freeling - SA - Australia - Retired Farmer
I have a shack near Swan Reach and have never seen the River so low in the 70+ years I have been going there. It's heartbreaking to see large River Gums dying and ecologically important wetlands drying up, with frightful effects on flora and fauna. Please use the $10b promised by the previous PM to DO SOMETHING!
L Fischer - Meningie - SA - Australia - dairyfarmer
The Lower Lakes, Albert and Alexandrina and the Coorong have been left to die by a Government who has admitted mismanagement and allocation of water from the River Murray. Those living around Lake Albert have been left to revert back to third world standards of living with no water to service their toilets and houses. The Narrung Peninsular has been decimated and no one in Government cares. Wakeup

management of rivers across the country must tske on board the need of the community and in doing so recognide that Fish are food and that they need water as well and their needs mean variable flows, reasonable flows and a stop to over allocation of all flows.

Please stop talking and DO something
F Gorey - Tarlee - SA - Australia - retired
There is a very urgent need to get real on water allocations, for too many years governments have been over allopcating water from the river system.Irrigators using dams particularly for broad acre irrigation must be made to incorporate some form of evaporation control into their storage systems. Almost as much water is lost evaporation as is available for use from the type of shallow dam storage

A Pontoppidan - Flemming - State - denmark - assistent

Talk, talk, talk. Governments need to get on with it. The river is a Tourist attraction for sport and relaxation. Low water will affect number of visitors which will affect local businesses. A more serious effect is on the wildlife and water life. I don't blame government for lack of water but I blame them for lack of action!!!
C Harvey - Narrung - SA - Australia - Farmer
Our farm is on the shores of Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong next to the Barrages. Not only are we struggling to access water as the levels drop past inlet pipes because no water is flowing into the lake. The water is 5000EC and muddy. Why increase water allocations and not let any water flow into the lake? We don't even have stock and domestic water let alone no irrigation for 400 milking cow
B Hastings - Meningie - SA - Australia - Administration
M Agars - Goolwa - SA - Australia - Wildlife Welfare carer
Take away water licences from large overseas investments and return the river to australians. If people want to grow rice and cotton go to a country with the rainfall that can supply their needs. Mr. Rudd have the guts to continue what John Howard tried to do, but victorian gov. stopped

Federal government should overide Victoria's decision not to signover rights and immediately implement spending some of $10bn allocated by Liberals. Water licences should be either reduced significantly in line with that experienced By SA irrigators/farmers or bought back by C'wth Govt body controlling them. The recent influx of water from rains/floods in the basin should be allocated wholly to SA.

The amount of water taken from the river has been over allocated and this must be corrected. No one owns the water and some should be able to use what others let enter the system but it is not their right. The health of any catchment is measured by the lower end.

It is about time governments stopped blaming each other for nobody putting any plands into insfrstructure, they a quick to build things in cities don't care how far over budget they are, take the water from the country to give to city as thats were there votes are they really don't care about the country folk, they need to go hungry first or have something go terribly wrong with the imported food

Politicans of all political sides are not doing enough to adequately address the crisis in the Murray Darling Basin -the environmental and social impacts to people living in the towns and cities along the river. There seems to be an out of sight and out of mind attitude and greater priority for city populations. Resources spent will be a good investment in the long term. Please help Lyn

Urgent action is required. The lakes at the Coorong are receding rapidly, and the bird life will be suffering very soon. Water quality has dropped, therefore the lakes fishing industry will suffer. Victoria must be made to realise the consequences of their stubborness to accept that they are only one state relying on the river.

Our rivers are becoming sluggish and clogged. It is not enough that the rainfall has substantially decreased all over the country, thus creating a water crisis for countless communities. We persist in making the problems worse by trying to dam the few free flowing rivers that still exist. How can our country expect to prosper when her arteries are blocked. Australia is being choked to death.

The river dried up,species diseappeared and the man (a politician ?) found himself alone. Overproud, he stood up, facing the sun, holding court on dried acid soils,on dead birds and garbage he created. He held out his arms , closed his fingers on rays of sunshine but no honey flow out of them. The man lay down and died. Later on, a flower came out from dirt, but there was nobody to smell it.
