Fantastic Water Levels in the Murray

The Murray has lots of water and is still ideal for a holiday

South Australia's Tourism Minister, Dr. Jane Lomax Smith said "the river is an absolute picture and it's a great time for a houseboat holiday".

Press ReleasesIn recent months there has been a perception that dry conditions across Australia meant Murray River levels were too low for houseboats, cruises and other holiday activities. The system of locks and weirs maintain a consistent level of water through South Australia and some parts of Victoria and New South Wales. These locks and weirs guarantee suitable water levels for houseboating and water activities at all times of the year and still make the Murray a great place to visit.

The river above Lock 1 at Blanchetown is still about the same. Water levels below Lock 1 at Blanchetown which run down to the Lakes have dropped around half a metre with more to drop in future. This will effect Mannum, Murray Bridge, Tailem Bend and the Lakes. However, this is a very deep portion of the river and still great for houseboating or other activities. All ferries are still operating.

The Murraylands Regional Tourist Association have stated: We would highly recommend the use of River Charts/Maps as these make navigation of the Murray River even safer. South Australia’s Waters, an Atlas and guide has been put together by the Boating Industry Association of SA.

Operators on the River are resourceful, friendly people who when times are tough, work together whether it be flood or drought.
